AUSTRALIA AND MEAT PROBLEM
London, Mardh 25th. The Commonwealth ueiegatYbn" nad its first meeting witn British Ministers this morning. The meeting was brief and amounted to littlemore than a formal introduction to Mr. llacDonald and his colleagues, neither side submitting proposal's. !.:eat was barely mentioned, except for the purpose of ■ arranging a further meeting with the-British Ministers on April 1. ■ . , The "Yorkshire Post," editorially di3Cussi ng'Mr. Lyona.'s meeting with the British Cabinet to-day, says* , that it is not to be supposed that the discussions will| be confined to beef, though the future of this commod-* ity is a crucial factor. "Mr. Lyons's aspirations are known to have little in common with that narrow sxclusiohism, the pursuit of which in the Commonwealth, has been attended with so much risk, even peril. Unfortunately the decline of beef as an article of diet in Britain ooincides with the development of chilled beef experiments in export from Australia. Australia has envisaged the prospeot of blooming one of the world's greatest exporters of beef. Such a picture must be ?ain without a corresponding enlargement of the outlet. Reoent experience has vividly shown that .such an outlet cannot be found in Britain. Indeed the supply already exceeds tbe demand." SINGAPORE BASE PRorcregs^ Mr. Euan Wallace, speaking on the"Naval Estimates, said that the work on the Singanore base was going- on steadily according to plan. .The graving dock should be ready to function in SepteffiDer...W37 fc and ji _the^wb.ole_base would be ready in 1939.
