THE BELT SERIES

TWO MATCHES DECIDED

Matches counting for the Rifle Champion Belt and a number of important aggregates were commenced today at Trentham, marking the start of serious shooting for many of the competitors at the National Rifle Association's meeting. ■ When the riflemen went down on the mound for the Canterbury Match the light was poor and there was a pronounced mirage which was difficult to pick up, particularly on the Seddon range. For the. Otago Match later the light improved, but a fish-tail wind from the left front kept the scoring down and no'possibles were registered. The mirage was quick changing and presented serious difficulties. Summed up, it was a typical hard Trentham shoot and kept even the most experienced marksmen guessing throughout the morning. . Four competitors each scored 49 in the Canterbury Match, A grade, first I prize going to A. A. Ford (Invercar- [ gill City Guards). F. H. James CNapier); King's prizeman -in 1913, divided second money with L. E. Braithwaite (Okawa).

In the B grade W. N. Kummer (Opaki) was the winner, with 48, similar scores being registered by C. B. Benton (Okato.) and D. Lundy (Bulls).

Wanganui riflemen, who have a remarkable record in service shooting, again carried ofl the champion service

team honours by a convincing margin. Tlf.s is the eighth time the Sir LoganCampbell Shield, the principal trophy for the service aggregate, has been won by Wanganui representatives. Soler, Gower, and Farley, members of the winning team this year, were in the successful combination last year. The Islington Cup and the Dawson Shield, both of which have been won by the Wanganui No. 1 team, are for the highest team scores in the tile and rapid shooting competitions respectively.
