CRICKET

TOWN V. COUNTRY

CENTURY PARTNERSHIP

VISITORS BATTING

For the continuation of the. Town v. Country cricket match at the Basin Reserve today conditions were good except that the wind, having veered round to the south, gave the atmosphere a cooler touch. The country team had made a promising start in reply to Town's tally of 259 when stumps were drawn yesterday, Reaney and O'Brien having advanced the score from 30 to 76 in their unbroken third-wicket partnership. The Hawke's. Bay pair carried on today as though they were well set, and for an hour they kept going to good purpose. In that time they doubled the score and recorded a century partnership. The meritorious stand was broken eventually when Parsloe took a brillient one-handed catch deep in the gully. That disposed of Reaney. It was not long afterwards that O'Brien also fell a victim to Tricklebank, who had then taken three for 25 off 12.2 overs. A capture by Blundell helped to loosen the grip which the visitors, through O'Brien and Reaney, had held on the game. When the luncheon adjournment was taken an interesting stage had been reached. The country team with five wickets in hand, required 71 runs to equal. Town's score. SOUND PROGRESS. O'Brien (25) and Reaney (20) quickly settled down upon resuming ' the innings this morning. They executed most of their strokes soundly and well, though boundary hits were few and far between. Runs came at quite a good rate, and the fieldsmen generally were kept on the move. As had been the case yesterday, Moloney was played with more freedom than the other bowlers and he proved rather costly. Each batsman recorded a half-century and between them they improved the score by over 100 runs, the first hour's play today producing about 80 runs. Reaney had made 52 when he lifted a ball from Tricklebank, who had just been brought on again, high down the gully. It seemed that there was little chance of the ball being interrupted in its flight to the boundary, but Parsloe, running round from a deep-point position, made a spectacular one-handed catch, the like of which is rarely seen. Reaney's score included only two 4's, but it was an innings of great value to the side. The partnership realised 127 runs. 157—3 —52. ■ That hurdle overcome, the local team met further successes soon' afterwards. Cutler, who took Reaney's place, did not stay long. He had made only three runs when he was bowled by Blundell. Prospects of O'Brien • making a century were entertained when that player passed the 70 mark. However, he did not get far beyond that. Tricklebank was bowling well! and he beat O'Brien with a good one. The outgoing batsman had given good evidence of his ability as a batsman, and with 73 he had made a very fine contribution to the Country account. His score included seven 4's. The fifth wicket fell at 165.Gallichari and Lambert were together for some little time before the lunch adjournment, Lambert enlivening proceedings by hitting a ball from Blundell for six. Just before the interval Gallichan was missed, in the slips off Tricklebank. At the adjournment the total was 188 for five wickets—Gallichan 14, Lambert 12. THE AFTERNOON'S PLAY. Gallichan (14) and Lambert (12) resumed for Country after lunch to the bowling of Moloney and Tricklebank. In the second ball of Tricklebank's first over Lambert was bowled. 193—6—17. Hatch was the incomer. A change was made in the bowling, Blundell relieving Moloney. The score mounted to 226, both batsmen going steadily, and another change was made in the bowling, Lamason. taking oyer from Tricklebank. Ell, at third slip, made a dive for the ball when Gallichan hit it near him. Hatch gained a 4 when Parsloe misfielded the ball, and in the next over he sent a ball from Lamason through the slips. vThe partnership was broken at 2.30 p.m. when Blundell bowled Hatch. The outgoing batsman had made a sound 27 in good time, hitting three 4's. 238—7—27. Hobbs was next. He made three and fell lbw to Lamason. 243—8—3. TOWNS TOTAL PASSED. At 2.50 p.m. Town's total was passed, Gallichan was then 39, not out, and Barker 9, not out. Details:— ' • TOWN. First innings 259 COUNTRY. First Innings.
