HUTT VALLEY BOROUGHS

.■Replying-further.to Mr. J. W. McEwan regarding local government in the Hutt Valley, Mr. D. W. Campbell writes: "Mr. McEwan draws attention to a compilation of figures,-;., With a special reference to Southland.; But it is at this point he only tells half a story. He forgot to mention, Resides the £ 19,898 loss, that area had to-pro-Vide the sum of £60,000 in the way of rates to make up the deficiency1 of interest on capital charges. He also forgot to tell you that in his opinion this concern was overcapitalised right from the start. To me Southland is no criterion, the reason being that the Hutt Valley, where I have my interests, ranks' on a population basis as' the fifth largest in New Zealand. He refers to the gasworks and its 4. per cent .sinking funds for depreciation. We ourselves have just awakened to the fact that this has been insufficient and makes us ponder. Will Mr. McEwan tell you how much has been spent out of revenue by the Hutt Power Board in renewals of reticulation of power lines? Your correspondent has been a member from when it was first constituted, and could possibly enlighten us."
