TRADE STATISTICS

FORM OF PREPARATION

Mr. W. Nash (Labour, Hutt)' asked the Minister of Customs in the House of Representatives this morning whether, in view of the desirability of trade statistics being available in the currency of the country concerned, he would arrange for the import and export figures compiled in his office being prepared in New Zealand currency.

"My view is that if it can be arranged without undue additional expense, trade statistics should show the value of our imports and exports in New Zealand currency," said Mr. Coates. "I have recently been going further into the matter and find that if certain modifications are made in the methods followed in the compilation of these statistics, it will be possible to prepare them in local, currency with a minimum of additional expense. I propose to take the matter- up with the Minister in charge of the Statistician's Department with a view to the publication of the figures in New Zealand currency." i
