UNDER A FIREMAN'S BUNK
"It is questionable whether he was really going to Timaru to obtain work or whether he was trying to avoid responsibility as regards his maintenance order by losing himself for a while," said. Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach in the Magistrate's Court today concerning Frederick Tattle, aged 27, a labourer, who pleaded guilty to attempting to travel on the Wahine without paying his fare. He was fined £2 by Mr. E. Page, S.M., and allowed a week in which to pay.
The Sub-Inspector said that Tattle was found under a bunk in the firemen's quarters by an officer of the Wahine just before she left for Lyttelton last night. He explained that he was on his way from Patea to Timaru to look for work and that his belongings were in the possession of a friend who was a passenger on the Wahine. He was a married man, separated from his wife.
To the Court Tattle repeated his statement that he was going in search of employment in freezing works at Timaru. He had no intention of avoiding payment of maintenance. He always paid the money when he had it. : " ■
