DR. SCHOLEFIELD GRANTED LEAVE ■
In order to enable him to accept the invitationi. of the Carnegie Corporation of New York to visit North 'America and Europe to study modern library developments, Dr. G. H. Scholefield, Chief Parliamentary Librarian, was yesterday afternoon granted extended leave by Cabinet. Dr. Scholefield will leave on March 14, and he expects to return to1 New Zealand about the end pf the year. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in/making: the announcement of Cabinet's decision, said the Government had been much interested in. the recent visit to the Dominion of Mr. Ralph Munn,- who, with Mr. J. Barr, of Auckland, had made a/preliminary survey of the existing library system on "behalf of the Carnegie Corporation. They were interested par^ ticularly in the possibilities of a better library service for the country districts, some of which V were inadequately,.provided. The - Government considered Dr y Scholefield's tour"an excellent opportunity of. investigating, among other library matters, the problem of a better library./ service in this direction.- ; He would, also study the national library organisation and modern archive methods. > • | AUSTRALIAN LIBRARIES* , Dr. Schoiefield Avill leave on March 14 for Australia, where" he expects to speiyl 'a fortnight studying the Parliamentary libraries, national libraries, and archive's income of the States. In .addition to visiting Canberra, he will make' a call at Adelaide, where the South Australian Government, has established a particularly: fine archive system. From Melbourne, Dr. Scholefield will proceed to South Africa, where he will make similar investigations at. Cape Town and Pretoria, paying special attention to the excellent national library system which has been developed in the Union. After-his visit to. South Africa, Dr. Scholefield will go on to England, where he wiil make a special inquiry into the developments of the regional library services which have grown up there to a notable extent during the past 20 years under the aegis of the county authorities. In addition he will study the archive methods in the United Kingdom, these including the collections, at -the British Museum and at various departmental^ libraries such as those at the Indian Office and the Colonial Office. He will also make a visit to Geneva, where a comprehensive library already has been de-' veloped. If practicable he will visit the famous national libraries at Vienna,and other European centres, and if time permits will look into the Dutch archives, which are exceptionally good. He hopes to attend the international library conference in Spain during the month of June. . ; AMERICAN TOUR. Following his European tour Dr. Scholefield will visit North America, calling first at Washington in order to study the Library of Congress, and also the national library services. While in the United States he will also visit the university libraries at .Yale and Harvard, and the State library at Albany, New York State. From New York he will g6 on to Ottawa, where he will give particular attention to the archives, there. He will investigate the library systems of California and the Hawaiian Islands. At Honolulu there are famous archives, including .index files of all papers published in the Pacific zone during the past century. Dr. Scholefield expects to return to New Zealand about the end of the year. During his absence his position at the Parliamentary library will be taken over, by Mr. W.S. Wauchop, assistant librarian.
