The Government has wisely decided to grant leave 6f absence to Dr. G. H. Scholefield so that he may. accept the invitation of the Carnegie Corporation to study library developments in Europe and North America. The Carnegie survey of New Zealand libraries furnished valuable material for the reconstruction, extension, and improvement. of the system; but as a remodejled system would be administered by .New Zealand librarians the opportunity of studying recent developments in America and Europe is one that should not be missed. A national library' system for New Zealand would provide.for a central institution closely associated with provincial-libraries based on the cities and, providing service also ' for the country districts. Wellington is now'" considering a library building scheme arid it is highly desirable .-that the plans should fit in with national development. This is not merely a question 7 of entertainment The reading habits of the people have'much to do with their opinions, and it-is .essential for the good government aridvwelfareof the country that the people should read widely and wisely. . ' "
