ARCHBISHOP AYEEILL TWENTT-FIVE YEARS A ■~■;;. BISHOP SERVICE TO COMMUNITY Twenty-one years as Bishop of Auckland were completed by Archbishop Averill on Sunday, for on February 10, •1914, he was enthroned in St.- Mary's Cathedral, Parnell. On. January 16 he attained the silver, jubilee of his episcopate, having been consecrated on that date, for.the. Bishopric of Waiapu, ..states the "Auckland Star." ]'■:'■ / A Thanksgiving services were held in St. Mary's Cathedral in commemoration of the jubilee. Holy Communion was celebrated by the Archbishop at Ba.m. "The preacher at 11 a.m. was the Yen. Archdeacon Mac Murray, who has served in the diocese of Auckland for' 43 years under; four bishops, of Auckland. The Primate took the service in the eyeining. Dr. Averill graduated B.A. with second-class honours in theology at St. John's College, Oxford. He was ordained by the Bishop of London, for the important curacy of St.- George's, Hanover Square,, afterwards serving in the parish of Holy Trinity, Dalston. In 1894 he was- offered the parish of St. Michael's,: Christchurch, and came to New.. .Zealand to fill that post with j conspicuous success. In 1902 he was appointed a canon of Christchurch Cathedral, in 1903 Archdeacon of Akaroa; and in 1909 Archdeacon of Christchurch. When. in : 1910 the Synod of Waiapu met to choose a successor to the late Bishop Lennard "Williams, Archdeacon I Averill was elected. Four years later, when, the' Synod of' Auckland made a similar request, he was translated. to the Bishopric of Auckland. On the resignation, of Archbishop Julius in 1925; i he was unanimously elected to be; Primate and.Archbishop .of New Zealand. In, Auckland, as previously, in Christchurch; and Napier he has endeared himself -to all sections of the community.. . '■', '..', I He has united the Anglican Church into a. real-fellowship and healed unhappy divisions. He. is also held in | very.high esteem by the other .Protes-j tant bodies and regarded as a leader. During 21. years of his episcopacy Auckland has grown, and his Grace has made wise provision for the spiritual needs of the suburbs. The northern part of the province has been provided with resident clergy. The population of the diocese increased to such an extent that the General Synod of 1925 formed the new diocese of Waikato of the southern portion.
