WAIWHETU SCHOOL FETE
A successful fete, organised by the Waiwhetu Home and School Association, was held in the'beautiful grounds of the Waiwhetu School on Saturday afternoon. The headmaster, Mr. C. Browning, and his staff rendered valuable assistance. - ' The grounds were gaily decorated with flags, and the fancy dresses of the children provided an additional vivid splash of colour. The stalls, which were erected on' the grounds, were sheltered from, the sun by .tarpaulins, and decorated with bamboo. Business was brisk. Mr. W. Nash, M.P., in declaring the] fete, open,: eulogised the work accomplished during -the past year. by the Home and School Association in effecting, improvements to the school and grounds. - Accompanying' Mr. Nash was Mrs.' Nash, and among the visitors, who were specially entertained at afternoon tea, were the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr. J. W. Andrews) and Mrs. Andrews, the chairman of the Wellington Education Board (Mr. W. V. Dyer) and Mrs. Dyer, and Mr. arid Mrs. Cole. . : Afternoon tea.tables, decorated with gladioli, were set in a classroom. Mr. and Mrs. Nash judged the fancy costumes. Mr. R. ,Meek's work as magician was much appreciated. A sponge cake competition resulted in Mrs. Gasson gaining first prize and Mrs. Gordon second. * The stall-holders were as follows:— Produce, Messrs. Liver and Webb: books, Mrs. Whiteman; soft drinks'and ice-creams, Mrs.1 Webb and Mrs. Ferguson; fancy and sweets, Mrs. Webb, Mrs. E. Pegler,, and Mrs. Scoori; 'sideshows, Messrs.. B. Pegler, Horwell, Staples, Willoughby,Tripp, McEwan; cakes, Mrs. Stunnell, Mrs. Willoughby; afternoon tea, Mrs. White, Mrs. Walker, and Mr. Fred Stunnell. 7 The sports committee was Messrs. Stunnell, Gray, and O. Burt; secretary, Mr. T. Bolter; treasurer, Mr. T. Hogan; at the.gate, Messrs. Whiteman, Hattaway, and Alexander. - Mr. C.
