YACHTING

SADIES'-- RACE

EVANS BAY EVENT

..The Evans Bay Yachl; and Motor-boat Club held its annual lad.es' races on Sunday morning. Some very good perform- . ances -were put up. The weather was perfect, a light steady northerly breeze providing ideal sailing conditions. The keel yacht race was a little disappointing, only three starters crossing the line. The course, perhaps, was' rather long for such light weather. The Wairere won the event horn scratch and sailed a very good race, Miss Williams being at the tiller. The various centreboard ' classes were combined for this race, and a very fair field resulted. The Ariki provided the biggest surprise of the day, when with a reputedly inexperienced skipper and a fourminute handicap she crossed the lino first with half a minute to spaie from the second boat, the Idono. F.rom a good start the Ariki squeezed round the Slip Buoy just ahead or the Idono, and this small lead she.held all the way. The Idle Along Gladys seemed a promising performer in the dirst round, being close behind the two leading boats, and although bhe slipped back a little she was-placed, third on handicap, a success which she well deserved. Kotare, the scratch boat, did not quite come up to ■ expectations, finishing third, but on corrected times gave place to the Gladys and Mayfair. On the whole the ladies sailed a very good race, and although occasionally there seemed to be two hands on the-tiller instead of- one,'and the boats. sometimes showfed a; tendency to indulge in rather ■ strange tactics] everything went smoothly and, no accidents marred a very enjoyable: morning. / The results and corrected times are given below:— KEEL YACHTS. • Course: Clubhouse to Point Jerningbam, to Somes Island buoy, to finishing line.
