The funds of'the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand branch of the Bri-, tish Red Cross Society' are being steadily reduced, according to a statement made by the chairman (Mr. H. Rose) this morning at a meeting of the centre. The an^-jant at present in, hand will provide for only three more . .years, be said, and' another member remarked, that the centre had.-■ been faced with extinction for the last six years,. .. _ . ,'. G ,. . .The meeting was attended by Messrs. H. Rose (chairman), A. H.. •Bath, W. Waddel, A. E. Boyes, F. S. Pope, Colonel R. S. McDonald, ( Lady Myers, and Miss M. Low. , ■ A request for sports'equipment' atthe Pukeora Sanatorium was placed before the centre by the secretary] (Mr. M. S. Galloway), who visited the • institution during December. • Six or eight billiard cues,' golf balls, and a! bagatelle set were asked .for; The chairman said that he considered the request was excessive. ■ Other members said that it might be ■] possible to get donations of the, material required. i The secretary said the billiard tables ' had been re-covered, but the cues were . old and would probably be out of the true. • Mr. Bath suggested writing to the' Miramar Golf Club requesting a supply of used golf balls. There was not a great deal of money involved, the chairman said, but the centre's funds were . always being drained, and they would have to be ■ careful. ■ ■ i Mr. Boyes said he considered the , matter was outside the province of the • centre, and that the sanatorium should | make an appeal in the-Waipukurau dis- j trict. It was decided that.the request for cues and golf balls should be referred back to the Waipukurau committee. Lady Myers said that the Mowai Home had a bagatelle set, and as baga: telle was a game that the patients became very, tired of it;might be possible to send it to Pukeora on loan. The matter was.left in her hands. BALANCE OF £39X5. ■ The treasurer's „ statement showed that the funds had been reduced by £181 5s since-December. The chairman said that the reduction was not great, but the balance remaining at the end of January, £3915,.was only sufficient for about three years. Mr. Bath: We'have been faced with extinction for the last; six years. The' chairman:' Yes; ,- It is no use crossing our bridges before we come to them. Tuesday, March 12, was fixed tentatively as the date, for .the annual meeting, 'the chairman remarking ( that the books would have to be audited before the meeting could be held.
