CANONISATION DECREES

ORIGIN OF PERSECUTIONS

(Received February 11, 2 p.m.)

VATICAN CITY, February 10. In the presence of the Pope, the preliminary decrees of canonisation were read in connection with Sir Thomas More and John Fisher^ The decrees stated that the persecutions in the sixteenth century began owing to the lecherous nature of Henry the Eighth, who,-unable to obtain from the Pope, the custodian of the tie of matrimony, the divorce for which he lusted^ therefore proclaimed himself in anger head of the Church in England in. order to proceed by his own authority to a second sacrilegious marriage. . -.-'.:

The Pope at length recounted the history of the martyrs and expressed pleasure at their approaching, canonisation.
