CANONISATION DECREES
ORIGIN OF PERSECUTIONS

VATICAN CITY, February 10. In the presence of the Pope, the preliminary decrees of canonisation were read in connection with Sir Thomas More and John Fisher^ The decrees stated that the persecutions in the sixteenth century began owing to the lecherous nature of Henry the Eighth, who,-unable to obtain from the Pope, the custodian of the tie of matrimony, the divorce for which he lusted^ therefore proclaimed himself in anger head of the Church in England in. order to proceed by his own authority to a second sacrilegious marriage. . -.-'.:
The Pope at length recounted the history of the martyrs and expressed pleasure at their approaching, canonisation.
