DEATH IN UNITED STATES
Mr. John Emery Andrus, regarded as almost the last survivor of a nine-' teenth-century group of capitalists to which Mr. J. D. Rockefeller belongs, has died at his home m the New York suburb of Yorikers at the age of eightythree, says the "Daily Telegraph." • He was often referred to as the "straphanger millionaire," because his thriftiness prompted him to use the New York underground railway rather than his own car. Mr. Andrus was, reputed to be one of the fifteen richest men in the United. States. His fortune has been estimated as high as £20,000,000, although he was always most reticent about his: wealth. t If his will confirms certain promises made 45 per cent, goes to the Surdna —his name spelled backwards—foundation, which will distribute it to institutions for the care- of orphans and the aged. The remainder will go to his'seven children. ; Born on a farm in New York State, the son of. a Methodist minister, he himself became a pillar of the Methodist Church of America.
