, '"'Mainsail" has received the following letter:— 'Dear Sir,—l should be pleased if you would publish this letter in order that the wrong impression gained by the reported account and subsequent 1 remarks concerning the inter-club and I Idle-Along championship, which were [conducted under the auspices of the I Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association, may be corrected. "From meteorological records taken at Rongotai Aerodrome the following information is of interest. ' Between 2.30 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, the greatest velocity of the wind w.as 40 m.p.h.; direction N.N.E.; conditions, squally. Between 9.30 a.m. and 10.30 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, the greatest velocity of the wind was 38 m.p.h.; direction, N.N.W.; conditions,, wind steady. "As it is necessary for the sailing committee to > make its decision, whether or not a race' is to be held, at least half an hour before starting time; it should,also be pointed out that from 2.30. p.m. on Saturday, the weather was moderating slightly, while on Sunday, from 10 a.m. onwards the force-of the wind increased considerably.
In the opinion of experienced yachtsmen, however, the sea conditions on ..the eastern side of Evans Bay were at ■ least 50 per cent worse on Saturday afternoon than on Sunday morning, as would be expected from the direction of the wind. "When spinnakers are carried In heavy weather, capsizes can be confidently • expected.—l am, etc., R. Kerr Hon. Secretary, W.P.Y. and M.B. Association."
