RAILWAY FENCES

CRITICISM BY FARMERS

The attitude adopted by the Railway Department towards the maintenance1, of railway fences was1 criticised at the meeting of the Dominion Executve of the New • Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday afternoon. Farmers, it was claimed, were suffering under an injustice in this respect. The executive decided that the attention of the Government should be drawn to the matter.

The Railway Department, it was stated, would not allow anyone to touch its fences and that it even prevented a person 'putting a stile over them, yet it now seemed to be taking the attitude that.its only responsibility was to provide the timber, the farmer to make and maintain the fences. Fences were being burned frequently. The Department appeared to think that, if a man had given land for fencing purposes, he was responsible for the fencing. If the land was taken by proclamation he was not responsible. Although the view was put forward that the Railway Department had no statutory liability for its fences it was contended thai farmers should disclaim any liability, for them.
