Referring to the Magisterial decision classing Balzac's "Droll Stories" as indecent, Professor Thompson, of Otago University, said that,the statement by the defence that the work was necessary for students was nonsense., Balzac wrote nearly-a hundred novels, all nearly first class, and students had" plenty of scope without opening the "Contes Drolatiques," which he agreed catered for the lascivious mind.
