RELIEF IN HAWKE'S BAY
A STEADY DOWNPOUR
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
HASTINGS, February 7. Rain today eased the fears of the j farming community that they were ! about to experience the severe consequences of the drought. In the early hours of the morning light showers began to fall in most parts of Hawke's Bay, and by 1 o'clock this afternoon it had developed into a steady downpour, which continued throughout the afternoon and evening.
The rainfall up to today was .52 of an inch since the beginning of the year, while little had fallen in December. In consequence the pastures were particularly dry,- although not alarmingly so for Hawke's Bay conditions. But in places where facilities were not available for watering stock there had been a good deal of movement in transferring sheep and cattle to other districts.
Today's downpour should do much to replenish the farmers' domestic water supplies. Tanks in many places have been dry for some time past. It should also have the effect of refreshing the dried-up pastures.
