70TH ANNIVERSARY

"EVENING POST'S" BIETff

fOMORROW'S SPECIAL ISSUE

Tomorrow's "Evening' Post" will be accompanied by a 36-page supplement, issued to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of its first publication on February 8, 1865. " ' '

The foundation. of Wellington's first daily paper almost coincided with,the establishment of the capital. in Wellington after a difficult and somewhat acrimonious controversy. The life of the paper has thus coincided with the most, important section of the history of Wellington, and this fact has been reflected in the character" of the supplement. In a large number of special articles, various phases of the development of the.city are discussed, showing how the small town of; the sixties has grown to its present stature. The story of the transfer of the capital is brightly told;' and there is an interesting sketch of early municipal history. The city's engineering achievements and; the remarkable develop- ! ment of the suburbs are described. The railways, the Post and Telegraph services, and the hydro-electric power system are fully treated as national subjects. Wellington owes • its existence as a city, to its hinterlands and its port, and these are adequately dealt with—the first in a rather; novel way as a. topographical problem, and the second with considerable attention to detail. Football, cricket, athletics,, and other outdoor sports are treated historically, and there is a special article on the history of racing in Wellington —a subject on which information is not easily come by.

A special feature of the siroplement is its liberal illustration. There, are many photographs that have been preserved from the early. days,, affording interesting comparisons with conditions in the city today, and several full paces of pictures are included. ;

Owing to the size of "The Post" tomorrow, special arrangements have had to be made for the handling, and distribution of the issue. The organisation for this work is very complete, but it is possible that there may be some delay in delivery to some sub» scribers. ■ .

Readers who desire to send copies of the paper by• post will find useful information in an advertisement on page 3. ■
