His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester arrived at Apia at 10 a.m., the Australia being escorted from four miles out to her anchorage by seven motor launches, gaily bedecked with bunting. The Duke landed, at the 1 principal wharf ,at 11.15 . a.m.,' his launch being escorted by numerous fautassi and bonito canoes, the reception being exceedingly picturesque and characteristically Samoan. His Highness was received on the wharf by General Hart, Administrator, and Mrs. Hart, the deputy Administrator, Mr. A. C. Turnbull, and Mrs. Turnbull and the Hons. Carruthers, Cobcroft, Maliotoa, and.Mataafa, members of the Legislative.Council. A guard of honour was provided by returned soldiers who were inspected by his Royal Highness. An address of welcome was presented on behalf of the citizens of Samoa and Tokelau Islands, to which the Duke made a cordial reply. Leading citizens and their I wives were presented and the Duke later placed a wreath on the memorial clock tower.- He was. given a rousing and enthusiastic reception from Europeans and Samoans en route from the wharf to. Vailima, formerly. Robert Louis Stevenson's home and now the official residence of the Administrator During the afternoon the Duke inspected a number of plantations and enjoyed a swim. The .citizens' ball will be held this evening at which the Duke and the official party will be present. . The weather is. gloriously, fine and the celebrations have been extremely successful. ,
