TRAM HITS TRAM
SMASH IN TUNNEL
CHILDREN ON LINE
Stopping suddenly to avoid hitting two children who were playing inside the Hataitai tunnel yesterday afternoon, a tramcar was struck by a tram which was following behind it, and both vehicles were extensively damaged. The only person, injured was the motorman of the second tram,: Mr.,J. Pearson; of 63 Endeavour Street,-Lyall Bay, who suffered cuts over his left eye, to his chin, and both hands. He was given medical attention and taken home by the Free Ambulance. !
The leading tram was.bound for Karori and Mr. Pearson's for Lambton Station. When about 100 yards inside the tunnel from the Hataitai portal the driver of the Karori car saw two children, brother and sister, ion the line, and he came to an emergency stop-to avoid running them down. Seeing the car in front stop suddenly, Mr. Pearson, promptly applied his magnetic brake, but. his tram appeared to skid along, the rails and it crashed into the rear of the stationary car, with much splintering of glass and*, woodwork. One of the vehicles was able to proceed on its journey and the other was taken to the Kilbirnie workshops. ■ The Hataitai tram tunnel is not for the use of. pedestrians, and although some trouble is caused by adults going through it on Sunday mornings this is the first time that children have been caught offending.
