GENERAL GODLEY
VISIT TO CARILLON
FAVOURITE TUNE PLAYED
This morning General Sir Alexander Godley and Lady Godley paid a visit to the National War Memorial Carillon where they were met by representatives of ex-servicemen's associations and others, and listened to a number of tunes played on the bells by Miss Gladys Watkins. Upon arrival at the carillon General Godley was met by Colonel A. Cowles, president of the Wellington Carillon Society, who introduced the General and Lady Godley to those present.
Before entering the tower Sir Alexander read the inscription on the foundation-stone and, pointing to the line, "and in memory of those that served or suffered," remarked that he had never seen that on any other memorial., "I think that is veiy nice," he said. "After all, there were a great many who suffered through the war." Both General and Lady Godley climbed .to the clavier floor to-meet Miss Watkins, who explained the playing of the bells. "You played as I came up my ; favourite tune," Sir Alexander said, "The Londonderry Air." When he asked Miss Watkins to show them how the bells were played she played his favourite tune again and then sounded the Divisional bell, Somme, and the Anzac bell. The bells were very beautiful, the General said, and the; whole idea of the memorial was wonderful. The automatic player was then adjusted by' the' technician, Mr. W. A. Duncan, and the General switched it on to play the changes on the bells.
