DAMAGE BY FIRES

(To the Editor.) Sir,—Please allow me space to draw attention to a nuisance and danger to householders in Tawa Flat. I refer to , the careless and -reckless setting fire to gorse and scrub. There has been an epidemic of it this past week t and the air has been filled with smoke. Some people set fire to gorse on sections which, do not belong to them, and cause alarm and damage to others who have then to look out on a blackened and dirty mess.. Trees and . shrubs are all damaged. Has the local ruling authority no power to stop this. Surely there is some bylaw or rule whereby. people who set fire to, other people's sections can.be made to pay for the damage .in some manner.—l am, etc., . . " ■' "' * DAVID PATON.
