KOROKORO CARNIVAL
SUCCESSFUL AFTERNOON
A happy afternoon was spent by the Uiany people who attended the second annual carnival and fire-fighting display at Korokoro on Saturday afternoon. Among those present were the Mayor of Petoue (Mr. A. Scholefield) and Mrs. Scholefield, Mr. W. Nash, M.P., and Mrs. Nash, Mr. W. V. Dyer (chairman o£ the Wellington Education Board), and Mrs: Dyer. Mr. Scholefield was introduced by Air. T. Webster, chairman of the committee, who thanked him for his attendance, also Mrs. Scholefield, Mr. and Mrs. Nnsli, and Mr. and Mrs. Dyer. He also thanked the fire brigades for their attendance. He hoped all would have an enjoyable afternoon. In performing the opening ceremony, Mr. Schplefield referred to the excellent water pressure that was- available for the fire at Korokoro on Wednesday evening. • ' .'"■■.' '■ .. Mr. Nash and Mr. Dyer also spoke. The times for the Gaynor Cup competition, for Koi'okpro firemen, wete as follows, the wet time being given first and the dry time second:—Fireman Fabian, 35 2-ssec, 41sec; Fleet, 41 4-ssec, 37 4-ssec; Packwood, 33 4-ssec, 39 4-ssec; Haines, 39 2-ssec, 36sec; Wilson, 36 2-osec, 37 4-ssec. Haiues and Packwood tied for the cup, and in the run-off Haines's time was 36sec arid Packwood's 36' l-ssec, Haines therefore being the winner. The Petone and Hutt Fire Brigade teams for the New Zealand championships at Blenheim gave exhibition runs in the fivemen flat event. The children's races resulted as follows:— ..•■■*' Girls.—s-7 years, L. McKeicli 1, U. Dennison 2; 3-5 years, L. Pago 1, D. McKeich 2; 9-11 years, I. Shand 1,-T. McNeill 2; skipping race (under 9), J. Gardiner 1, R. Gartside 2j thread-the-needle (13 and under), J. Harrison and T. McNeill 1; three-legged race (15 and under), J. Harrison and T. McNeill 1. Boys.—3-5 years, D. McKeich 1, A. Swaysland 2; 5-7 years, A. Shand 1; B. Douglas 2; 9 and under, li. Thompson 1, K. Cummuskey 2; potato race (11 and under), L. Wallace 1, S. McKeich 2; threelegged race, S. McKeich and Page 1; sack race (15 and under), K. Beasley 1, M. Beedy 2. The winners of the various other events were as follows: —Gents' tug-o£-war, Petono Fire Brigade; stepping the chain, Mr. Frank Taylor; ladies' nail-driving, Miss B. Beasley; treasure hunt, Master McKeich. The children of the Korokoro School gave nn exhibition of folk dancing. Two clowns,- Messrs. Pincock and Walker, amused the children. Acceptable music was provided by the Petone Central Band. The competitions were coconut shies and skittles. The "sex-appeal" machine gave vise to considerable amusement.
