INSTITUTE GO UNDER
Old Boys proved once again that they are a redoubtable batting side in their match with Institute at the Basin. Reserve on Saturday. If" one batsman failed the next took his place, and at the tea adjournment Institute's first-innings total of 252 was well within striking distance, though it was not passed till an hour and a half later. Burnetts and McGuire opened when Old Boys resumed their innings shortly after 2 p.m., and both batted very confidently. McGuire was dropped at 20 by Tucker oif Fortune, and was very lucky to survive two appeals. The batsmen were, however, still definitely on top. Lamason, who followed McGuire,. was dropped, by McLean at cover, but it was a very difficult catch. At the tea adjournment the score stood at IG7 for three wickets, with Bainbird partnering Burnette. McKeown was bowling very well, sending down very little loose stuff, but he could make no impression on Burnette, who passed his century just after half-past four. McKeown was also good in the field, and often intercepted Burnette's shots near the boundary. The fielding was otherwise only fair, as was, however, to be expected under the conditions. Tucker made amends for his earlier failure by 'holding a catch from Burnette off Duffy at deep leg. 223—4—113. Burnette had taken 185 minutes to compile his score, giving a faultless display of steady, determined batsmanship. He hit fourteen 4's. Rainbird was soon clean bowled by Duffy, who was the only bowler to achieve any success, and dv Chateau succumbed to him first bowl. Duffy's figures were now three for; 16. R. Lamason followed, but after being dropped by McLean, was well caught nest ball by Stevens, in the slips. ' With Institute's total now passed, the remaining batsmen merely played out time, though Barclay hit up 34. The umpires were Messrs. Lambert and Cook. Details:— INSTITUTE OLD 1 BOYS.
