LIVESTOCK SALES
HEAVY FEILQING ENTRY
GOOD SHEEP SELL WELL
An exceptionally heavy yarding, comprising about 25,000 sheep and lambs, came forward at the Feilding sale on Friday. Although the major, portion of the entry consisted o£ lambs, there was a record entry of ewes for so earaly in the season. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report:lnriv I™ b f c f tlon f me Pens of particularly chmce b.f. and w.f. wether lambs suitable for rape came forward. Tor these if 38 fitl '°ng f m Peti«°u at prices pvVI y t ? g ?i °n late rates- It is quite evident from the tone of thj sale that farmers.with rape are rather anxious to fulfil their requirements right-away. On the other hand, any backward lambs showing road stain were more or less o little easier. "Included in our ewe offering we had some rather good lines of five-year-olds which met with keen competition, while, on the other hand, any ewes showing road stain and with indifferent mouths were more or less neglected, although the market, in so far as breeding ewes were concerned, was easier than preceding sales. Still,.-in the face of the climatic conditions through which we are passing, ths sale must be looked upon as a particu-larly-strong one. It is quite evident that t."). m., now on any good lines of fresh, chiselled-mouth ewes are goin" to be keenly sought after. This was clearly evidenced at the sale when, on some of our better-class ewes,-bidding vwas keen and animated from a"■ particularly strong bench of buyers." . . '--'-The .'{manual-ewe' fair will be held on Friday, February 15, and in the face of this sale it seenis clearly evident'that good four and five-year ewes will be in strong demand. The 6ame remarks apply to two-tooths. Although there were not many two-tooths forwarded on Friday, quite a' strong 6ale resulted for those yarded. A rather heavier yarding than usual of cattle came forward. In the beef section values were on a parity with late rates, while store, run-bred cattla were more or less neglected. The usual entry came forward in cull cows, and met with quite a good sale.- ■'. Dalgety and Company, Limited, report a very heavy yarding of 6heep and lambs at the Feilding sale, and a light yarding in all other sections. Breeding ewes were, penned in larger numbers, the quality being very mixed. Ewes with dependable mouths and condition were competed for fairly strongly, but a . lower range of prices was the order of the day. Low-conditioned and travel-stained ewes were inclined to be neglected, and aged ewes showed a decided drop in price. However, the }arge attendance of the public was able to absorb practically the whole offering, very few lines being turned out unsold. The yarding accommodation in the store lambs' section was taxed to its utmost to* pen the offering, which was again a heavy one. The quality was very mixed, but the buying power remained strong throughout, until the close of the sale. Here: again a slight easing all round was noticeable, but there was practically a total clearance.. Considering the scarcity of feed throughout the district the sale all over was a very sound one. In the cattle section there.was a good yarding of both run and "dairy beef; and a fair entry of store cattle for the time of year. In the beef market no change in price can be quoted, and store" cattle also met with quite fair competition. • Quotations:—Fat lambs, 18s 3d, 225; fat two-tooths, 23s Id; fat wethers, 18s 3d, 19s; fat b.f.s, 14s 3d, 19s; woolly w. lambs, 10s 6di lls lid, 13s 4d, 14s 6d; woolly b.f. lambs, 10s 4d, 10s: 9d; shorn, b.f. lambs, 10s, lls 3d, lls 4d, 14s, 14s Id,-. 14s 6d; shorn w.f. lambs, 9s 4d, 125.1 d, 12s 7d, 14s sd, 14s 9d; w.f. w. lambs, lls 2d, lls 4d, 13s 9d; ewe lambs, 9s, lls, Us 2d, lls 4d, 13s 9d, 17s, 17s 4d; rri.a. breeding ewes, 17s -4d, 17s. 9d, 18s Id, 18s 4d; five-year ewes, 13s 9d; 14s, 15s 6d, 17s 6d, 18s 6d, 18s 7d; four. and five-year : ewes, 16s sd; two-tooth ewes, 20s, 225,' 25s 6d; twotooth wethers, 20s 6d; fat heifers; £2 15s, £4 10s; fat cows, 21s, £4 2s 6d; fat bullocks, £2 7e 6d, £7, £7 ss; store heifers, 17s; store cows, 10s, 12s 6d, 17s, £1 13s; three-year Hereford steers, £5 10s; Jersey bulls, £1 Is,: £2 2s 6d. "NOT UP TO EXPECTATIONS." y The New Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Distributing Co.j Ltd., report on the Feilding sale:—Over 30,000 sheep were yarded at the Feilding Bale, and this huge entry necessitated a division of selling labour, store ewes being sold by one set of auctioneers and ;stoi'e;: lambs by. another.
