RAILWAY GAUGES
AUSTRALIAN SYSTEM The system of differing railway gauges in Australia was commented upon by Mr. Gt. M. Wilson, late superintendent of the motor power section of the Canadian National Bailways, who arrived from Australia today by the Marama on a holiday trip. Mr. Wilson said it seemed to him that the 'act that the gauges varied in the different States of the Commonwealth, must be a drawback to progress. The transferences entailed were not so • bad from. - the point of view of passenger traffic, but in ■•connection with. freight they must be costly. Mr. Wilson, who is accompanied by Mrs. Wilson, has come to spend about six weeks in New Zealand, and intends to visit Milford Sound among other places of scenic interest. They have been in Melbourne for tho Centenary celebrations. _■-..•.'.-., . .
