SUNNY MAID'S SCURRY

FATAL FALL NEAR FINISH Although she was making her first and only appearance at tho ' meeting, Sunny Maid, was backed down to third favouritism, in the Kaitoke Hack Handicap, a five-furlong scurry, and she amply justified the support accorded her, for after, being one of the vanguard all the way she continued on to win decisively. This race was tragically marred by' a simple accident, which, by the chain of circumstances, resulted in the death fifteen hours later of H. Mackinnon, one of the most popular and successful lightweight horsemen in the Dominion. Sunny Maid, the winner, carries the same colours as Cuddle, those of the Hastings trainer C. J. ■ Stowe, and sho is also a daughter of Psychology, being a four-year-old chestnut mare from the Sunny Lake—Merry Roe mare Sunny Roe, tho dam also of Sunny Sky and Sunny Song. She was recently successful at Waipukurau, where she beat Sunny Song, and at her only subsequent start prior to Saturday 'she was sent out favourite on the final day at the Manawatu Meeting, but failed to fill a place. .Emissary again went a very solid race despite his increased weight, and ho fully merited second spoils. 'Always among the leaders, he was running ,iust behind Cup Bearer, with Sunny Maid on their out-

side and probably leading them. Below the false rail he came through on the inner of the tiring Cup Bearer, with Capital in hot pursuit, and although the winner proved a length too good lot- him he succeeded in holding Capital off by halt' a head. Capital was also handy to the firing lino throughout, but he had to come, home from behind Emissary. Very vigorously ridden over, the last furlong, he just failed to get up for second money. Brown Betty, ahowing her best form since her return from Sydney, was finishing on fourth, and the favourite Beau Gallante, after being chopped back on the fence at the start, was a handy fifth. Abbey Feale (one of the early leaders, but out on the track), Harvest Moon, Colombo, Vinco (who again dwelt at the start), and Full Throttle wore the next to complete., The accident that so tragically brought about the death of Mackinnon occurred about a furlong and a-half from the finish. Just before this point, Cup Bearer, who had been one of the leaders up till then, began to tiro very quickly and dropped back fast into the following bunch. She became unbalanced and fell, throwing her rider (Mackinnon),. who still might have escaped without serious hurt had he not been struck by the hoofs of Vivienne, one of tho rear horses, as he was lying on the ground. Mackinnon was' removed at once to hospital in a critical condition, and he succumbed to his injuries early yesterday morning without regaining consciousness. - N
