INSTITUTE SCORE FAST
Batsmen low on the list scored runs at a good rate and retrieved Institute Old Boys from a poor position against Wellington College Old Boys at the Basin Reserve1. Duffy (13), A. McLean (16), and R. McLean (4), and Tucker (19) were out with only 54 runs scored, when J. Scott commenced'his hard-and-frequent- .hitting against bowling-that was ' steady'but not difficult on a wicket that was- on1 the slow side. Scott was inclined to be impatient, but made his runs quickly, attractively, and forcefully, his main-scoring strokes .beins punishing drives and pulls. He gave two difficult chances in the sixties and seventies. Harris. (18) and Henderson (33), both of whom were run out, stayed with Scott in partnerships of 77. and 58 that were marked by brisk running. J. Lamason bowled steadily into the strong northerly wind and swung a little, but he was played-with ease by the patient batemen and failed to take a wicket, although he was a little unlucky. He bowled 23 overs for 65 runs. His fielding was of a very high standard at silly mid-off, and the catch with which he dismissed Tucker, off a full-shouldered drive, was brilliant. O'Loughlin took three wickets i'or 35 runß off 13 overs'and was the most successful of the bowlers. Old Boys missed Bird, their express bowler, and Wiggs acted in his place, getting pace off the wicket but find-ing-accuracy with express style difficult. P Stevens (28) and Lucchesi (22 not out) played the bowling with confidence and put on 60 runs for the ninth wicket. Old Boys commenced at 5.48 p.m. against Fortune and A. McLean. Lucchesi took a good catch behind off Fortune and Wiggs was out for one with the score 3. Burnette and McGuire carried on till stumps. Messrs. Lambert and Cook umpired.
