THE SCOTTISH SOCIETY. (Spoclal to the "Evening Post.") NELSON, January 26. . The Nelson Frovincial Scottish Society celebrated the 176 th birthday of Robert Burns last evening, when over 100 people assembled in the Velma Hall. Chief G. R. Jamieson presided, and those present were privileged to hear an eloquent address by Mr. J. W. Shand Smith, in proposing the toast "To the Immortal Memory of Robert j Burns." The entrance of the haggis, always a feature of Burns Night celebrations, was carried out with all the appropriate, ceremonial. Piper J. Patterson, playing the pipes, preceded Chieftain D. Bishop, who carried the haggis, and a procession proceeded around all the tables before tho chief received the dish. The address to the haggis ■ was delivered by Mr. K. M. Black. The toast to tho Nelson Society was proposed by the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Moffutt), who p_aid a tribute to the organisation for the prominent place it took in tho life of the city. ' Chieftain H. Coltman, repjying, said that they were losing several of their keenest workers. Mrs. S. Johnston would shortly leave Nelson for Wellington, Mr. B. Butler, the treasurer, was going to Dunedin, and Chieftain' Bishop was also leaving the district. Entertainment items were contributed by Chieftain Bishop, Mr. W. Horrocks, Mrs. W. Moynihan, Mr. G. J. Mackio, Chieftain Nat Brownlie, and Mrs. Chambers. The Nelson Education Board has maae the following permanent teachership appointments, to take effect from February 5, when the Nelson schools reopen:—Granity, secondary assistant, William J. Jcu'erics; Woodstock, sole teacher, Eobert Craig; Arapito, sole teacher, Archio W. Farrow; Hinehaka, sole teacher, Georgina P. Scott; Inangahuai Junction, sole teacher, Gordon P. Mitchell.,
