PARIS, January 22. , The Colonial Office, referring to the massacre in. French Soraaliland, says that M. Albert Bernard, aged 25, who was recently appointed administrator in tho Dikir district, was requested to assist tho Issas tribe, whom age-long enemies frqni the Abyssinian border, tho Assaimaras, numbering 800, raided while they were moving .their flocks.
Bernard, within three hours; .completed preparations, and with 1G; Spahis and 88 friendly tribesmen inarched to cut off the Assaimara«' retreat. Tho force was sniped at all night while it was encamped, Bernard attacked in tho morning and fought until the party's ammunition was expended; when'the assailants rushed in and massacred the survivors. Bernard was among the last to fall, covered -with wounds, under the swords of the attackers. • ■ ' '•'.'-
The Government has posthumously awarded him the Cross of the' Legion of Honour in recognition of his heroism and self-sacrifice. :
