LODER CUP AWARD
TO LORD BLEDISLOE
WORK FOR NATIVE FLORA
His Excellency the. Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, has been awarded the; Lodef Cup in recognition of his advocacy of the protection of the native forest and in recognition of the practical encouragement he lias given to the growing and cultivation of the native flora. , The Loder Cup was presented some | years ago by Mr. Gerald Loder, now j Lord■■Wakehurst, after his visit to the | Dominion. Itis awarded annually to! the person who, in the opinion of the committee established for the purpose of determining the award, has performed during the year the most meritorious service in any direction calculated to further the wishes of the donor, which were that encouragement should be given to the cultivation and preservation of the Dominion's incom- j parable flora. - | Previous awards have been made to ; progressive nurserymen for exhibit^ at the National Flower Shows of native plants, but it was considered that this method of awarding the trophy v was hardly in keeping with the donor's wishes. Hence a new scheme was devised which gave a very wide application to the phrase. "cultivation and preservation of the Dominion's incomparable flora," and the award is now to be made annually on this new basis. > The cup was originally presented to the Government' to; award, but the Government referred the matter to a committee drawn from the Royal Society of New Zealand, the Now Zealand Institute of Horticulture, the New Zealand Forestry League, and affiliated bodies, and the making of the' award now lies in the hands of this committee.
Previous winners have been Messrs. Duncan and Davies (1930), Messrs. Bennett and Sons (1931 and 1932), and Mr. T. Waugh (1933).
