His mount, however, showed a disinclination to go on with his task, and Mr. Smith was persuaded to give up his attempt. He had the distinction 'of winning a race on the Hokitika beacli in 18(56, and on Wednesday carried similar colours to those he wore on that occasion. ..

Lucidus, dual sprint winner at New Plymouth this week,, revealed his nearness to form by running second to Wait and See beaten only a neck at the Waipa Meeting, a fortnight ago at his first start for thq season. He is a six-yearrold gelding 'by Illumination'from the Birkenhead mare Lady Biddy, hepce he is a fullbrother to Biddy's, Boy, a promising handicapp'er .who did hot have' a ver-y long career, and he is now owned by Mr. W. X Thompson. Ho failed to win a race last' season, but was placed on mimerous occasions. : ■■■.

Tahurangi, winner of the Atiawa Hack Cup on the first day at New Plymouth and'ihe hack distance event'on the second day,' had previously shown, his only winning form on the same track. This was at the combined hunts meeting in SeptembeTi when; after running second to Spearform on the first day, he turned the tables on the mare over $% furlongs on the second day; He is a four-year-old bay gelding by Potoa, from the Signor mare' Senyora, the dam also of the southern jumper Morena; and he is owned by the New Plymouth solicitor Mr. A. XStandish, for whom R. Barlow is training him. He was sent down to the Trentham sales in 1932 but no bid was made for him: and he was afterwards disposed of privately. ■
