BALLARAT BAND CONTEST MELBOURNE, November 3. Ten thousand peoplo were present at the Ballarat Oval on Saturday night for the termination of the band championships. New standards of brilliant playing were established. With most points in the A grade, tho Melbourne Fire Brigade Band secured final possession of the Besson"~Shield. Awards are: A .Grade selection.— Hawthorn (No. 1 test, 137 points, No. 2, 141), 1; Woolston, N.Z. (144' and 129), 2; Brunswick (136 and 136), 3; Firo Brigade (271), 4. Quickstep: Firo Brigade, 184, 1; Woolston and Malvern Tramways, ISO, 2 (equal). - Aggregate: Fire Brigade, 455; Hawthorn, 454; Woolston,' 453; Malverh Tramways, 448. . Tho judgo, Mr. Stephen.- Yorke, England, said that tho standard was equal to the best in England, and tho task of judging was very exacting.
