RADIUM RAYS
; A STORAGE SYSTEM v Scientific and mining circles in Canada are pleasantly excited at tho news that a Canadian physicist, Professor AlacLcnnaa; ot1 the University of Toronto, has perfected a stornge system for radium rtys, by means of which it can bo kept at work 24 hours; a day, whether there are patients to be treated or not, states "The Post's" Vancouver correspondent. Professor MacLennan applied tho principle that common elements, when bombarded' by high-energy rays, become temporarily, radio-active. He imprisoned three metals, aluminium, boron,' and beryllium, in the leaden chamber in which radium is kept. He, found that tliey absorbed radio-a-ctivity, and on being removed gave'off rays of their own. Whether they have the same effect on living tissue as has radium is now being investigated, with the aid of plants and small animals.
