President Boosevelt's industrial truca was seriously threatened today by the action of the Great Atlantic and Pacific 'tea. Company, operators 6f a nation' wide chainVf grocery stares,''in closing 300 stores in Cleveland, Ohio, as a protest against attempts to foi'hi a Union among the employees. ' '. , ] '
Company^ officials charge the union with intimidation, 'aiid declared thS.t they were definitely withdrawing their entire business, with an' estimated annual tjirnover of -20,000,000" dollars, from Cleveland, rendering 2500 out of work. L ■"■.'•■' •; *..; '.
The Socialist Party announced plans to boycott' all the company's stores. There is a possibility that: the American. Federation of-Labour .niay take.a similar stand. ' N ■.■.'.,-,
President Koosevelt on. September 30 proposed an armistice between: Capita) and Labour, ■ while the newly^rebrganised National Recovery-, Administration evolved legislation, intended, permanently to safeguard the rights of each. ■ From those willing to join in- establishing this hoped-for peace-period, :th« President said he Would seek. .assurances ' regarding the making. and.maintain ence of agreements which, could be mutually lived up to and under which Wages, ■ hours, and working-.conditions might be dotefmiiied.
