COUGH AND STEETON
SATURDAY'S CUP BRACKET
Beside's'Sungem,. whose credentials have already, been there are two other South -Island mares on.the minimum in Saturday's ;Newf.Zealand'.' Cup field-' Cough;.arid "Steetonj"'both "daughters of. Sutala—and because.they are, : little known in these parts it. may be. of some interest briefly to- deal with their form; .breeding, and other, .claims; for 'inclusion in. "the premier two-mile race of ■ the Dominion. Cough! is'an eight-year-old.', brown .mare by SutalaVfrom..-'the'-'Australian-bred ina're Yawii, a daughter.of Cooltrim from-Quiet-est, by.Grafton froih' Slumber; by Trenton from Night.nT,ar.e. This..is a'notable Australian ffimily,* from which.-" sbfne-. .highclass stay/ers.:.have descended,!, including the great, mare Wakeful. ... A'branch of Nightmare's family- came nearly, to .New Zealand,' -arid: i'e'p'resentatiye's "here have been. Noctuiforni; Bdri Ton,- Bbn : Reve, Eligible,- -4tc.,- 'all- first-class performers. - '. Cough 'was teecV by .-theJate .Mr.- G. -D. Greenwood, but she was evidently sold as a yearling or two-year-old,- .as when she made her first appearance as a late three-year-old-, she- ran in, the ' colours, of the Southlandefc-Mi1. Tlßaird, who -still: owns her. Her successes last season .included the second day's main handicap at the Dunedin'Summer Meeting and the Wyndham Cup. Her fifth at Motukarara last Saturday was her best effort" this season, but she has not had tracks, to suit her, being useless on anything except the firmest going. For this reason she was transferred to Riccartou by her trainer F. W. Ellis during the winter to undergo her Cup preparation. On Saturday she will have the riding services of W. H. Jones, who brought home Palantua in they Cup last year. Steeton is also owned by Mr: Baird, but she is- raced on lease by another' Southlander, Mr. J. M. MacGregor. .She and CoCgli1 will therefore form a bracket in the Cup, and the Wingati/i apprentice W. Jenkins; has-been engaged to. pilot her. Like Cough, she is a daughterI.'Of Sutalai and. she. was, also bred. by. the ,late Mr. Greenwood, from whom - Mr. B.aird probably obtained her at.the same time as he acquired. Cough. : She ,is: a' year younger than Cough, being a seven-year-old bay mare from the Danube—Remission II mare, Roden, hence being a full-sister to RameseSr who raced with success in the North Island and later in Otago. Last season Steeton won thres. races, including the Gore Racing Club-Handi-cap, 1% miles, and the Easter Handicap, VA miles,, as, Riverton, and she was recently the winner '■'■. of .the Mosgiel Handi-. cap, i^ riiiles,:''on'the opening day-at the Dunedin' Spring. Meeting' : She. was .also racing at Gore last.-. Tfrefek, where she was strongly, fancied but;;could finish t ; only fourth .'each'day, : Hpyever, according to asouthern report, she', was most unlucky on the .'first, .day ./particularly, ■ being knocked, back; to,- la'st^and then . finishing very strongly. " ' She-.ihas always been trained-, at j Inver'cargill^ty T. E.-- Pankhurst.- . ■~-,.. i ."'..■-■ -.'" i',. Whether either of these two mares will prove carJable '■'of measuring up to. Saturdnr's N'eSv; v:Zealand. Cup*'field remains _ to be'seen,'but'■■'(s& performance and breeding there,is-ample"to give them at least-out-side chances- - iSutala,, their. common sire, was byVElysian from Lady Hester, by St. Leger from Musket' Maid, by Musket, and there is; .therefore plenty .of staying blood in his-pedigree? ' Hefwas highly thought of as- a:: 1 yearlirig' by Mr.-.' Greenwood, and as an early two-year-iold^he; showed* great promise, bwti.before €hat. : :;seasbn' closed;h( wag badly -galloped on by-his stable companion Bimeter when winning at Trentham in; a race .in which Bimeter, Rangitero, and Dinner Gong all fell, and, saved for. the, stud after being kept in slings at Tventham for some, Weeks, he.was sent first to Australia and then returned to the Dominion, where Mr. Greenwood' used him' for several .'of his best mayes. He proved his worth in this capacity, for amon^'hia. gets'have been Pride, Jaloux. Autobiography; Precious. Greenaway, Wayward, Rameses, etc.
