THE NELSON RESULTS

NEWS OF THE REGIMENT

(Special to the " Evening Post.")

NELSON, October 31

In the military examinations held at Nelson in August: the following promotions are noted:— ,

Captain to Major: Captain "W. V. R. Fletcher and Captain C. W. Fitzgerald (Ist Battalion N.M. and W.C. Regiment), Captain H. F. Allan (Ist Cadet Battalion, Nelson College).

Lieutenant to Captain.-—Lieutenants 0. J. Hutchison (Hokitika), B, Catley, K. C. Hockey, M. A.' Nightingale (Nelson). Lieutenant H. C. Grace, of the Nelson-Marlborough Mounted Rifles, secured a partial pass on promotion to captain. The following n.c.o.'s have passed the examination for the first appointment to commission:—Sergeant H. J. Scoltock, Sergeant K. Wood, Corporal J. A. Childs, C.S.M. W. S. Boyes (Nelson); Sergeant S. L. Wood (Westport), Sergeant K. Fleming (Greymouth.). N.C.O. passes from the First/ Cadet Battalion (Nelson College) are,as follows:—C.S.M. W, H. Bryant, C.S.M. T. W. Straker,,Sergeant J. R. Coote, Sergeant T. G. Ealfe. ' ■

The training of guards of honour in connection with, the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in January is now in full sw.:/.g, a period of each parade being devoted to this work. The Nelson guard personnel will be supplied from Nelson and Stoke, and a small detachment from Takaka who have volunteered to pay all their own expenses is coming to Nelson for the visit.

Recruiting throughout the whole regiment, which is the strongest in New Zealand, is proceeding steadily. The regiment is fortunate in being comprised of an excellent type of recruit, and each prospective member undergoes the closest scrutiny before being admitted;

, The Durham Light Infantry', 'with which the regiment is allied, has for^ warded, copies of their quarterly journal, printed at Newcastle-on-Tyne,, and in future an article will be supplied-to this publication each, quarter.
