NELSON NEWS

TOWN HALL SUGGESTED

SWIMMING SEASON OPENED

(Special to tho "Evening Post.")

NELSON, October 20.

It was a reproach to Nelson that tho city had-no-Town. Hall, said Councillor 11. E. A. Washbourn at last ovening's meeting .of the Nelson City Council. Ho suggested for. the consideration of the council that if they put a proposal to tho ratepayers to build a Town Hall they would have a good chanco "of getting it through, and get tho extension of the council offices thrown in. It seemed to the speaker'that the Mayor's proposal to have- tho present council offices extended into a pioneers' memorial hall and council chambers combined did not stand an exceedingly bright chanco of going through. Therefore ho. suggested the alternative scheme. Tho Mayor said ho was extremely unwilling to fall in with the proposal, to replace his memorial hall scheme, and was prepared to debate the matter at somo length. Ho went on to refer to the present cramped quarters of the council's staff. Tho discussion, then lapsed, most of the councillors having left the chamber owing to the late hour. By the death of Mr. William T. Hargreaves, Kelson has lost another of its respected citizens, Tho late Mr. Hargreaves was born at Nelson in October, 1862, and was tho eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. M. P. Hargreaves, both pioneer settlers. He was in the Anchor Foundry for about 47 years, as a boilcrrnaker, and retired about two years ago. He was quiet, anl unassuming, and was of a very kindly disposition, and had many friends. He was a member of the Nelson Oddfellows Lodge for 55 years. For many years ho was a member of the council of tho Nelson- Acclimatisation Society, and was made a life member last year. Ho was also a member bf the Anglers' Club. His wife died eight months ago. Ho leaves a grownMip. family of five sons, Messrs. Thomas, Cecil, Ernest, Alan, and Harry, all of Nelson. There aro 12 grandchildren.

Tho Municipal Swimming Baths wero opened for tho summer yesterday, and with splendid weather conditions the opportunity of having the first plunge of the season was readily taken, by a good number of swimmers.
