CITY PROPERTY DEAL
MANNERS STREET BUILDING
The trustees in the estate of tho lato Mr. H. Brittain, ii well-known chemist for many years in Wellington, have sold the property in Manners Street known as Brittain's Building to Mrs. C. Beauchamp, of Oriental Parade, for £17,000 cash. The deal was transacted through Messrs. J. Fanning and Company as agents.
The present building was erected in 1910, the architects being Messrs. Hoggard and Prouse. It is bolieved to have been the first stoel frame structure in the Dominion and tho first, also, to have a cantilever verandah. Mr. Brit'tain acquired the section in 1876 and added considerably to tho original octagonal 'wooden building then known as tho <(Pill Box." From the forties tho site has always been associated with chemists' establishments. Two karaka trees flourished at the rear, until tho whole section was required for tho ereEtiou of the present building.
