SWINDON BY-ELECTION
SEAT REGAINED BY LABOUR

LONDON, October 26. The Swindon by-election to replace Sir B. Mitchell Banks, K.C. (Conservative), who has been appointed to a Judgcship, resulted as follows:— Dr. C. Addison (Labour) 20,902 W. W. Wakeficld (Conservative) 18,523 Mr. Wakefield was at one time well known as an. international Eugby footballer, and lias captained England, Cambridge University, Middlesex, Eoyal Air Force, and Harlequins.
The Swindon seat has changed hands on several occasions during recent y ears —i a 1924, Sir E. M. Banks defeated the Labour candidate, Mr. E. H. Tawney, by a majority of 2904. In 1929, Dr. C. Addison captured the seat for Labour against the sitting member and a Liberal, F. C. Thornborough, tha Labour majority being 2161. In 1931, Sir B. M. Banks reversed the decision in a straight-out fight, Dr. Addisoa being defeated by 4794.
