AUCKLAND'S AIRPORT
Alternative sites for the establishment of an airport for Auckland were suggested to the Auckland City Council in -a report from the Auckland branch of the Town Planning Institute of New Zealand, says the "New Zealand Herald." The report stated the time -was ripe for serious and careful consideration to be given to the provision of airport facilities. It was essential that an airport should b'- close to the heart of the city, suitably situated for the accommodation of both aeroplanes and seaplanes, and as close- as possible to main" lines or terminals of other means of transportation. There had also to be a sufficient urea to enable heavily-loaded machines to land or take off. Largo level spaces were not readily available in Auckland, but the two niost likely sites were the flat land along the Tamaki Eivor and Point England and the reef and sandy spit extending out into the harbour between Cox's and Meola Creeks. The institute stated that it was not equipped to carry out fhc proper investigations to determines which site should be finally selected and 'it recommended that the council should have both areas fully and impartially investigated, with an inquiry into the cost of acquisition and development, means of access and the natural suitability of the sites, with respect to obstacles, winds, currents, tides, and the like, for all gi'm'iiil and special purposes. It was thought that an airport would form a very suitable memorial for the city's centenary in 1940 and that, if such an idea were adopted, it was not too early to place the matter in £i'ain,«
