DAY IN PARLIAMENT

SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES

Tho whole of tho Supplementary Estimates wero passed by the House of Eopresentatives yesterday, an additional half-hour being required to finish them. Four subjects took up most of tho day, the establishment of tho auxiliary police, tlio large increase in the salaries of two members of the Unemployment Board, tho supply of medical men for mental hospitals, and the down-grading of schools. Of these, discussion became as near to violent as ever it does in tlio New Zealand House when the voting of money to equip the auxiliary police force- was undei consideration, tho - Opposition purporting to see the establishment of a system of spying by one section of the community on the remainder.

With tho object of speeding up work, tho House will sit on Monday night, when the Unemployment Amendment Bill, which the Government intended should bo put through yesterday, will be dealt with. If that is got out of the way, the Local Authorities Interest Reduction and Loans Conversion Amendment Bill will be dealt with.

It is proposed to take the second reading of the Agriculture (Emergency Powers) Bill on Tuesday, when long and sharp discussions will probably take place. Tho far-reaching effects of the measure should make it impossible for the Government to foiv.o it through' at one sitting, and the present indication is that somo days shall Ixi siient before the Bill becomes laiv.
