To give- an idea'Of the' demand for table poultry in England -arid of the size of the industry there, one concern took an order to deliver 30,000 birds of 31b in weight every week in the year a-t a price of Is 2d per Ib. Sir Edward Brown is shortly to publish his autobiography. Undoubtedly he is the greatest living poultryman, and his services to tho poultry industry are well known in all countries. The founder of the World's Poultry Science Association, .he gave many years of his life to its enrichment. He was knighted for his work after tho great International Congress held in England in 1930. Victoria has established n. controlling body known as the Utility Poultry Control Council. In particular they attend to tho appointment of judges, including tho examination of applicants, and to tho management of poultry shows. Tho sexing of day-old chicks is an established practice-in Canada and the United States. In order to become efficient a special course of instruction is essential, but any person with keen, quick eyesight can learri the practice With only small hatcheries in New Zealand, it is doubtful if we will have a visit from the Japanese experts who have spread the knowledge in most countries. But since the Australians have started classes it is to be expected that we will have a visit from some authority before long. TIIO fattening of surplus cockerels in batteries is becoming more popular each year. Exercise is restricted and food saved, whilst disease is more easily kept under control. Messrs. Cater Bros., of Victoria, hatch 100,000 chicks for their own requirements every year. Many thousands of sheep are used annually to supply meat to their birds, and no less than six girls are employed to pack eggs alone. This sounds almost like an American story, but it is quite true.
