DROP IN CATTLE PRICES

FEILDING, October 20,

Prices for run cattle took a distinct turn downward at tho stock sale today, when the yarding was 50 per cent, above advertised numbers, comprising principally I.A. and Herei'ords, with a fair sprinkling of Jerseys in the yearling section. Throughout tiie sale the market was dull, the general opinion being that previous rated were too high. Bidding was very restricted, . with prices dropping by 0s to 10s for grown and 7s Od to 10s for young cattle. Some exceptionally good pens of Hereford and P.xV. bullocks offered failed to reach the owners' reserves. Cows and heifers for fattening purposes sold relatively better than the male entry, but hero again prices were considerably lower than previously. Some nice linfis of P.A. yearling heifers were submitted, but not many were sold at auction. Prices for these generally were down 10s a head. Good Shorthorn-cross steers reached £4 10s; Hereford bullocks,. £4 19s; P.A. bullocks1, in good forward condition, £5 12s (id; P.A.- steers, to £4 7s; P.A. ' and Hereford-cross bullocks, £4.Gs; good Jersey store heifers, to £3 55.. '

Tho dairy cattle market was very lifeless with many lines hard to quit. The fat. cattle sale opened briskly with very good prices, best ox beef going to 26s per 1001b, and cow to 20s, but the sale slumped as soon as butchers' limited requirements were met.

Fat sheep sold at previous rates. A small entry of store sheep sold well, though at easier prices than tho exceptionally high levels of a month ago.

Fat Sheep.—Prime fat hoggets, 22s Od to 23s 8d; prime fat ewes, 20s 3d to 225; very good, 18s Cd to 19s Sd; fair, from 15a 3d to 17s lOd; maiden ewes, 24a; prime heavy wethers, 24s 4d to 25s Gd; good, 22s 4d to 245. Stores: Ewe hoggets, 245, 25s lOd, to 27s 3d; wether hoggets, good, 22s to 23s 2d; others, 17s 7d to 20s 3d; b.f. two-tooths, 17a 3d, 19s Bd, to 21s Sd; m.s. hoggets, 17s 9d to 21s Id; two-tooth wethers, 19s to 21s sd; four-tooth, 235; ewes, with lambs, 31s to 31s 3d.

Cattle. —"Dairy springing heifers, forward, £3 7s to £5; late calvers, £2 2s 6d to £3 10s; heifers, calved, to £2 2s 6d- springing cows, forward, £3 10s to £4 ss; late calvers, £2 2s 6d to £2 15s; cows in milk, good condition, £3 to £4; fair condition, £2 to £2 12s Od. Store cattle: P.A. bullocks, £5 3s, £5 ss, to £5 12s 6d; two-year steers, £2 10s; threeyear, £3 14s to £4 7s; yearling, £2 9s; empty heifers, £3 10s to £4 4s; cows, £2 14s to £3 10s; Hereford bullocks, £4 19s; two-year heifers, £2 15s to £3 2s; P.A .-Hereford cross bullocks, £4 0s; empty run heifers, of mixed colours, good weight, 56s to £3 ss; light, Jersey breed, 23s to 20s; store cows, 30s to 345; yearling heifers, 25s to 40s. Auction mart prices for poultry were: Hens, Is to 2s 4d; cockerels, Is 5d to 2s lOd. CATTLE FAIR AT HUNTERVILLE. The New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd., offered a yarding of 634 head at the cattle fair at Hunterville on Thursday. The entry comprised some very fine lines of station cattle, which met good competition, the tone of the sale being firm throughout. Young cattle were in good demand, a very nice line of 44 yearling P.A. steers, on account I of Mr. J. J. Thomasen, Rewa, realising £4 6s. An exceptionally fine line of three-year P.A. bullocks, on account of Mr. John Lambert, realised £5 16s. Also a very attractive pen of three-year Red Polled bullocks, on account of Mr. N. K. Hammond, reached £5 13s. On account Mr. V. H. Anson, a line of 80 three and four year P.A. bullocks sold from £5 12s to £5 15s. Prices were:—

JERSEY BULL SALE. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., offered a yarding of 24 one and two year old animals at the sale of Jersey bulls at Eketahuna, on account of Mr. J. L. Heckler. The bulls came forward in good condition. The butterfat backing in Mr. Heckler's herd is second to none in the Dominion, and to (his feature no doubt the success of the Mile was duo. The top price was -15js>, and considering tho serious depression affefilins the dairy industry at present, this must lie considered satisfactory. The average price realised was Ogs. '
