YACHTING

LOCAL CLUB ITEMS

The Kitty put up-tho boat performance for the day at' tho Evaus Bay Club's opening, winning both races for her class, writes a correspondent. In the keel-yacht races R.P.N.Y.C. boats were conspicuous by their absence, and the Romp was seen to have a distinct advantage over the Kestrel and Annetta. Much interest was centred in the Idle-Alongs, which staged a game of "kiss in the ring" at one of the :buoys. Also, tho speed launch race might have been quite interesting had the Miss Taubman been equipped with auxiliary sails. Perhaps the best racing of tho day was by..the Tauranga class which shows signs of a successful year. ' The Roua-Jellicoe scratch races resulted iv the R.P.N.Y.C. Sanders Cup nominations, Kitty, Jannet, Tassie, and Lavina finishing in that order in both races, and it was noted that the selectors were in evidence taking records as to finishing times, crew work, etc. The Lavina's new mainsail evidently will need careful attention if it is to become a first-class sail, as it was quite obvious that it affected her performance. M. C. Hollis and his crew are to be congratulated on the showing they put up in those races, as tho Jannet is undoubtedly a faster proposition this year. The Taipore has had her new mast fitted and is expected to be- sailing this weekend.

The Nanette aud Viola did extensive cruising over Labour Day weekend, and as both these boats haye been in the water for quite a few weeks, it is anticipated that they will be up for a "scrub" before the racing starts. The Advance, Lavina, June, Jannet, and Demon - represented the centreboard visitors from, the R.P.N.Y.C. at the Evans Bay opening on Labour Day, and keen racing and an enjoyable daywere experienced. The courtesy of tho Paremata Club iv sending up seven of its boats to join in the display of yachts afloat at the Plimmerton Club's opening was gjcatly appreciated: by Plimmorton members. The Miss Josephine, Lois, Monica, Wairoa, Noleen," Kineora, and Marie sailed out to Plimmerton on Saturday for tho Plimmerton Club's opening.

In the race for Takapunas at Paremata last weekend "Nutty" Davis's Marie gave a wonderful exhibition of spinnaker work, and carried her kite too far and eventually capsized when in a leading position. The re-sail was won by the Noleen,;with the Wairoa second and' the Twink third.

The Tauranga class could muster only three starters, Max Colman.'s Mac, with a rather general handicap of two minutes, winning easily from Bill Reid's Robin, with Bill I'ishor's Linnet third. ...

Tho Antoinette was launched at Worser Bay on Sunday,. and her new owner shaped very well. Tho following notes on R.P.N.Y.C. centre-boarders, have been supplied by "Leading Jib.:— Bernie Tonka' and his hard-working crew desorvo -great credit for tho way in which they have, painted the Juue. Her colours aro now white and green.

Lavi.ua has now lost, her piano finish. She is painted blue and white this year ami looks very well.

Retaliation, "C'appy" Itix'.s new boat, is quite a stately craft, painted in his usual colours tangerine and black.

Tho keenness of the progressive Worser Bay Boating Club members is evidenced by the tremendous amount of time being put into tho boats generally, and every owner, seems particularly anxious to usurp- the exalted position held by last year's Pukeko, The eloetion of Mr. A. F. Mumford to the post of commodore of tho club was popular, and judging from his past activities he could well bo compared with the well-known political personage "who gets thing's done." Five new Idle-Along class yachts have been built sit Pelono during the winter, and tluL Hcretaunga Club now has a flri't of thirteen of this i-lass silonr.

Tt will bo an cncouragomcnt to Takiipuna class owners to h;ive the 12ft (iin trials held at Petone. this season*
