GENERAL ELECTION
MR. COATES IN IGNORANCE
An attempt to draw from the Minister of Finance (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) the date of the next Genoral Election was made by Mr. E. A. Wright (Independent, Wellington Suburbs) in the House of Representatives today during tho discussion on the Supplementary Estimates of the Electoral Department.
Mr. Wright asked whether the ballot papers for the licensing poll had been printed, and whether the- Minister could toll them the date of tho next General Election.
"I am not in a position to say whether the ballot papers have been printed," replied Mr. Coates. "I am in total ignorance of the present position."
Mr. J. A. Nash (Government, Palmerston): The new party should know. Mr. Coates said that he could not say when the General Election would take place. "Anything may happen," he added.
Mr. J. O'Brien (Labour, Weslland) This year, next year, sometime, never.
Mr. Coates: Tho real difficulty is this: It is difficult to arrange a date suitable to members.
