CITY COUNCIL TENANTS
POWER FOR EVICTION

AUCKLAND, October 25.
A decision to give notice to quit to tenants who are accumulating arrears in rent was reached by tho City Council tonight. The property committee stated thai the property inspector's report disclosed an accumulation of arrears^in some.tenancies, and it recommended that it be empowered by trio council to serve tenants who were four weeks or more "in arrears with their rent with notice to quit, and that in cases where tho rent was three months in arrears the committee should bo permitted to carry srtch notice into effect.
Councillor C. Bailey said that most ot the teriants in question were relief work ers who.received only £1 16s a week
"There are cases in iirhich people are making no effort at all to meet their obligations," said the Mayor Mr. G. W Hutchison "The povtfer is one which the committee certainly should havo, and the committee can bo trusted to treat each case on its merits. If a man is making an effort to pay his rent he will1 receive consideration. If he refuses to pay anything he does not deserve any consideration."
The committee's "recommendation was adopted.
