RONGOTAI COLLEGE

CROSS-COUNTRY RUN

The annual cross-country run by the pupils o£ Rongotai College was held in ideal weather conditions on Wednesday afternoon. A record field of over 230 starters participated. The course was the same as in previous years—testing the powers of the runners to the full iv that it comprised not only undulating open country but a fair amount of beach work, hill climbing, and fairly thick undergrowth. A number of fences had also to be negotiated. Under the. circumstances, the times for a course of about three miles must be considered very good. Particularly meritorious was the run of J. W. Dustin in the junior handicap, and of A. D. Smith in the junior championship. The times were 18min lOseo and 17min 32sec respectively, not very far below thoso of the two. senior events, which were run in 18min, and lCmin 55sec respectively. The points gained by the winnets in the two championship events count towards points gained by them in the senior and junior mile events on sports day. On the combined results will depend the- award of the Scottish Harriers' Cup (senior) and the Junior Mile Cup. Tho following are the results:—Junior Handicap, J. W. Dustin, 1; D. A. Dreyer, 1; K. Smith, 3. Junior championship: A. P. Smith, 1; L. W. Bruce, 2; N. Row, :!. Senior handicap: J. W. Mulholland, 1; M. Mannont, 2: I. J. Krlscy, 3. Senior chnmpkmship: A. D. Martin, 1; W. A. Allan, 2; A. C. Stewart, 3.
