STALLION MANITOBA.
VICTORIA, NOT DOMINION
Hecont.lv it was reported by a cable from London that *he Manna JiorM: Manitoba had been acquired tor (ho stud in the Dominion, but advice is now to hand from Australia that Manitoba's purchase wiis made on behalf of the Victorian breeder Mr. A. T. Creswick, whose stud is at The Nook, in the Goulbum Valley.
Manitoba should be a valuable acquisition to the bloodstock industry in Australia, as he is one of the best-performed horses to leave England in recent years, and he is the first representative of his sire to stand at the stud in the Commonwealth. As a two-year-old he was regarded as the first colt of the season, and in his subsequent racing as a three-year-old last season he proved, that he could both sprint and stay. He was first home in i'our out of five starts and won £3342 in stakes as a two-year-old, and ho went out favourite for the Guineas last year, but although he failed in this classic he demonstrated clearly afterwards that his form in that race was not right.
Manitoba is a beautifully-bred horse from Lord Woolavington's stud, ami his pedigree shows inbreeding to St. Simon iii a marked degree. There are three lines of St. Simon in Manna. His sire, Phalaris, was a grandson- of the St. Simon mare Cheery, and Buckwheat was out of Sesame, who was a daughter of St. Simon. Then Lady Mischief, the gramlam of Manna, was by St. Simon. Swynford introduces another line of St. Simon to Manitoba, as his sire, John o' Gaunt, was out of the St. Simon mare La Flec-he. The fifth line of St. Simon in Manitoba comes through Santa Brigida, whose dam Bridget was a full sister to the Derby winner Melton.
Manitoba descends directly from Honeysuckle, a. sister to that great sire Newminster. It is really remarkable the number of first-class sires which come clown from _ Honeysuckle. A few names that come readily to mind are St. Serf, Ayrshire, Valais, Liuacre, Melton, Perth, and Greatorex. Manna we know as a Derby winner and a successful sire. Three of his sons are Miracle, Mannamead, and Colombo. Miracle won the Eclipse Stakes and other races, and is now a valued siro in England, and so is Mannamead, who raced for three seasons and retired undefeated, after having won races over all distances up to a mile and a half.
